IELTS Test – What is it?

If you need to take the IELTS test for study or visa purposes, you may be wondering what to expect. E2Language will answer some of the questions you may have about this test and help you prepare.

The International English Language Testing System, otherwise known as IELTS, is a standardised English proficiency test that can be used for entry into English-speaking universities or as part of visa requirements. It is accepted in many English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

The IELTS test consists of four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

The reading, writing and listening parts of the test are done on the same day. The speaking test is done separately on a different day.

Each skill (reading, writing, listening and speaking) is judged out of 9. The maximum total score that can be achieved in the IELTS test is 9.

IELTS Test – Academic or General?

There are two types of IELTS tests: Academic and general.

The academic IELTS is required for entry into academic programs in English-speaking universities.

The general IELTS is required for immigration purposes.

The listening and speaking tests are the same for both the academic and general IELTS. However, the reading and writing are different.
